Ignoring Your Intuition In The Birth Space

We often hear the phrase, "Trust your intuition." As parents, and especially as women, it becomes easier and easier to tune out that voice... and in stressful situations? Let's make that voice almost nonexistent.
Doubting your intuition doesn't mean you're weak or uninformed. It often reflects the messages we've received throughout our lives about whose voice matters most... Superiors, elders, bullies, etc. If that sounds familiar, this post might resonate.
Here are a few ways self-doubt can show up during labor:
Feeling like you need permission before making a decision about your own body.
Assuming everyone else in the room knows what's best, even when something doesn't sit right with you.
Worrying that asking questions will make you seem difficult or uncooperative to medical staff.
Saying "yes" before you've fully understand what's happening.
Ignoring a gut feeling because you're afraid of being ridiculed.
Believing your concerns are "probably nothing"
Forgetting that your values, goals, and knowledge on the situation at hand matter just as much as anyone else in the room... especially this last one. Read it again if you have to.
So, then, what does it look like to actively listen to your intuition in the birth space? How can you advocate for that still, small voice?
Taking a moment to pause before making a decision when the situation allows. (This is huge. A 5 second pause may feel like 5 minutes to you, but it feels like even less to the people around you. Give yourself a moment to process.)
Asking, "Can you help me understand why this is being recommended?"
Requesting information about the benefits, risks, and alternatives of an intervention.
Saying, "I'd like a few minutes to talk this over with my partner or support person."
Speaking up when something doesn't feel right, even if you can't immediately explain why.
Trusting yourself enough to ask questions without worrying about being seen as difficult or wasting peoples' time.
Changing your birth preferences as new information becomes available, while staying aligned with your values.
Accepting an intervention because it feels like the right choice for you after understanding your options.
Recognizing when your body or emotions are telling you that you need rest, nourishment, movement, or reassurance.
Trusting your intuition doesn't mean rejecting medical expertise. It doesn't mean saying no to every intervention or relying solely on instinct.
Instead, it means recognizing that you are an important part of the decision-making team. In fact, as the parent, you are one of the most important people in the birthing space who deserves to be heard loud and clear.
As a doula, my role is not to tell you what decisions to make. My role is to help you feel informed, supported, and confident asking questions so you can make choices that align with your goals. Sometimes the most empowering decision is accepting an intervention.
Other times, it's asking for more information or more time. What matters is that the decision feels like yours.
Reconnecting with your intuition is a practice. It begins with believing that your voice deserves to be heard.
You don't have to know everything to advocate for yourself.
You don't have to be fearless to ask questions.
And you don't have to navigate birth alone.
At Little Hare Birth Care, I believe that informed choices and self-trust go hand in hand. My hope is that every client leaves their birth experience feeling heard, respected, and confident that their voice mattered every step of the way.
